Day 9

Awesome mailbox #2

April 4th, 2010

This road was lined with bizarre mailbox contraptions, many not secured to the ground, but this one was easily the best. According to one resident, the guy who plows this road gets a kick out of flying down the street so fast that the snow he's pushing slams into the mailboxes and knocks them over. Any artists or designers out there have a creative solution for these poor people?

I’ve been reading your blog from Day one.
I think it’s an awesome idea. I’m loving the stories you’ve posted so far.

    Thanks again.

I’ve never heard of the plow issue, being relatively new to this “snow” thing, but a lot of digital ink has been spilled about securing mailboxes from teens with baseball bats. I imagine these solutions would work well for plows, too.

Yes! My sister lives in VT and they run into this. You need a hanging mailbox. The post is way off the road, the the box hangs from another post perpendicular to the first. It doesn’t hang rigidly; it swings. When the plow man comes, the post is far enough off the road, and the box won’t snap off because it’s able to swing.

a steel conc reinf post dug so deep that it can’t fall over with a 12 ga steel box welded to the top using a column base plate as a base for the steel box. (as long as cost is not an object)…

From what I’m seeing here, they need no help. :) Maybe a nail strip for the plow? But that could be bad karma…
