Day 147

A night in the city

August 20th, 2010

I spent last night with these guys, eating, talking, listening (to what, you will soon find out), and walking (we took a post-dinner stroll around nearby Lone Fir Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Portland).

  1. Woo Hoo…first this time around…great family…thanks for helping out Matt…

  2. Karen says:

yikes. and for an evening’s entertainment, you know…. just for fun and relaxation – he takes a WALK?
I guess after 3000 miles or so, why not?

  3. John in MI says:

Even more suspense than the samurai sword; we have to wait even longer to find out what they were listening to.

  4. Gigi says:

Love their smiles, thank you Betsy, Scotty and Mark for taking care of Matt last night.

  5. Don in Tennessee says:

Thanks to Betsy, Scotty and Mark for continuing the tradition of being welcoming and openhearted guests to Matt. I am sure he enjoyed your company and stroll around the cemetary. I looked this palce up and it has a very rich history and was the only cemetary in Portland for years. many Chinese were buried here and then moved to China later.

Thanks for the link Don… what an interesting cemetery.. old ones are the funnest to walk around and look at… like Karen said why Matt would want to go for a “walk” after supper is beyond all of us… although he is taking it easy for a couple days.

    • charlie says:

wait, they were buried, and then they moved? spooky!

  6. Saun in Ohio says:

So how long do we have to wait to find out what they were listening to? Thanks Don for the info….. :)

  7. Donna in MI says:

What happened? When I got to these new pictures, there was another “picture”; you know, black screen, like a video that Matt sends, but I think it was a little different. Maybe a .wav file or something. After I clicked on this picture, the black video “picture” was gone. Can’t figure it out, but it was there!

    • Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

I saw it to and now I can’t get it back. And this wasn’t the I’m walkin’ here video egg that Jason put in either. There is a video that must be trying to load. It’s of Betsy and Mark performing a concert for Matt. Hope it loads so we can hear it.

  8. Julie in Cincinnati says:

Many thanks to Betsy, Scotty and Mark for taking good care of Matt!

  9. EDL in MN says:

I had the same thing happen as Donna in MI. I also got the ‘Hey I’m walkin here’ video clip that was referenced within the last couple days.

ON a related note, I wonder what the hit rate on this site is???

  10. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Matt that’s not fair. You tease us with this listening portion of your evening and then keep us in suspense as to what it is. More patience I suppose for all of us. We’re used to it by now. But we better find out what it is! Please.

  11. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Hey Matt, what about that baroque musician you met back in Montana? If I remember correctly he lived in Portland. There were several people I thought you met along the way that were from this area. Maybe these are some of the people you are staying with?

  12. Thanks Mark for lending Matt such a BIG helping hand!

  13. MN Roxanne says:

Thanks Betsy, Scotty and Mark for hosting Matt for a night and taking good care of him… you have great smiles and we all appreciate your generosity!

  14. Betsy, Scotty and Mark….I guess by now you have heard this a few times…but wanted to add mine to the list of Thanks!

    • Candice in Alabama says:

Me TOO, Karen TOO! I will miss seeing the pictures of the wonderfully generous people taking care of Matt!

  18. Nadine says:

Portland is a beautiful city, as are the people. As soon as I get home from work everyday, I go onto your website, then look on our paper map to see exactly how far you have left to go. I’m sure when the end comes you will feel relief but sadness, and the thought of where will you go next…Be safe.

  19. Donna in MI says:

Thanks Betsy, Mark and Scotty for your generous hospitality to Matt and showing him a good time in Portland. Another night in a real bed! and a home-cooked dinner…and a private concert. Hooray for Matt!

  20. Paula Barnes in VA says:

Lone Fir Cemetery! My gr gr gr grandparents George and Ophelia Vosburg are buried there! It is truly a small world! Matt, your adventure has been an affirmation of the American spirit. Breathtaking scenery and good people. The music is beautiful, will set a wonderful mood for the rest of the day. Thank you for this journey.

  21. Ruthie in CA says:

Thanks to Betsy, Mark and Scotty for sharing their home and providing a nice respite for our weary traveler. Reading the comments ie:Paula Barnes in VA…I can’t help but wonder how many more lives Matt has crossed paths with that have not posted. Matt crossed my path outside of St. Maries ID. He stood in the same spot that we placed my Mothers Ashes. He was taking a picture of the “boat garages” and the bridge. Small world indeed.

  22. Lizi says:

I’ve been keeping track of your trip since early on but this is the first time I’ve posted. You are such an inspiration! The “hobo nation” is pretty awesome too! And what a country this is… the land and especially the people! I wish you all the best as you reach your goal and in the rest of your life. Thanks Matt for sharing it all with us :)

  23. Jen says:

I have been tracking your progress for months. To my surprise, you stayed the night with my wonderful neighbors yesterday! I can’t believe you were two houses away. I feel like I just missed the boat, lost an opportunity, something broke. Wow. So close, yet now you’re moving along off Ash Street. I know Buckman neighborhood treated you well. Happy that our weather is cooperating this week. Good Luck!

  24. Mom says:

Thank you, Betsy, Mark and Scotty, for being so kind to Matthew.
