Day 279

Life

October 4th, 2012

UPDATE (11/18/2012): Things are going well with my family, and we've really appreciated all the kind words and wishes! I just made it back to New York for a short visit and was able to get in a few days of walking. I still have a couple of days of photos from early fall to work through, and then I'll post my recent pictures. I'll be in town again for some walking in late November and periodically in December, and then I hope to be back to my regular schedule by the beginning of next year.

I'll finally make use of my email list to send out a message when I return to full-time walking; if you'd like to be notified, just sign up here, if you haven't already. Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Due to some health issues in my family, I'm going to have to put my full-time walking on hold for a while. I'll try to keep posting a few photos each day from my hefty backlog, but I'm not sure when I'll be back to a regular schedule. You can check here for more info as time goes on and I get a better sense of things.

Matt

P.S. Thanks for all the thoughtful, supportive comments!

I thank you for your daily effort on the behalf of others. I thank you for the extraordinary insight you have on what you see and the foresight to present it in a wonderful manner. I thank you for your diligence on a daily basis, but most of all I thank you for your honest presentation of life in the Big Apple. When you’re able, I hope to see more, but if not, then know that you have been appreciated. Leo Lawton

Best wishes to you and your family, Matt! I’ve never been to New York City, but it pops up in my dreams from time to time: I’m walking along posh and crowded boulevards that are covered with deep carpets and usually end up inside some noble hotel where I can’t find my way out. Next thing I know I’m walking some dark, deserted street and I see the NY skyline at the horizon. I ask myself: Gosh, how could I get there so quick! Well, your blog shows quite a different picture – but fascinating nonetheless!

  38. Valter from Brazil says:

You show NY of a smart and nice way. I like your blog very much. Trust in God. You will know when to come back.

Matt after visiting New York on our North East Motorcycle Ride I saw a lot of New York but nothing like we see in your close up pictures. Sometime in near future if my time permits I would like to come back to the city and spend 3 or 4 days walking with you. I truly enjoy what you are doing, you went west and I went on trip thru where you walked when we went to Upper part of Michigan and went west to Oregon we took lots of pictures and sent copies to several on this blog, as far as I know they liked them. You give us inspiration to get out and see the country I know it has me. Take care of Family first and formost, we would not respect you like we do if you did not. When you can we hope you can get back at it, if there’s anything we can do just ask. Will email you from time to time to check on you, appreciate the email you sent me the other day.

  41. Bill Willsie says:

    Dear Matt:

What I really like is the type of photographs you take, because these photographs are taken from a street perspective, and thus, in my opinion, they are really more interesting than the ones taken by the regular contemporary fast-paced tourists.

Hey Joisy Jeff- if you ever wanted to come to Ohio to see us gals, nows your chance. Just hitch a ride with Sandy and you’ll be here in an instant.
Seriously though, hope and pray all is well with you and everyone else there along the Eastern Coast. Stay safe!! You too Matt – Glad you’re not out walking in this mess.

    • Jeff in Joisy says:

There once was a girl named Sandy..she chased Halloween away without Candy….

Hi Yall. All is well – well kind of sort of…

First I say…all of NJ is not the shore…but that is all you hear or see these past few dayts. My power was out only 20 hours – but my folks were out 7 days. Yesterday I saw 50 Telephone poles taken from a yard to be put up somewhere. A community of 100 people had no power or emergency lights for just short of a week. They were all over 75. But that is not what your heard or read about. Just the millionare homes with the million dollar views on the Barrier Island of the Jersey Shore. Well I say .. God decided to take the shore back = and he said.. It is my beach = and I will do with it what I want.

Thanks for all the prayers. Please pray for the people of Breezy Point Queens. They are the real ones who got hurt by the storm, in my opinion, the most. My love to you all. Peace and a sense of Humor.

      • Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Thanks Jeff for posting here! I have heard so much about Breezy Point so don’t worry, it’s out there. I only watch the Weather Channel and they have shown the hardest hit areas and especially Breezy Point. How sad for those people. And for the shore, it’ll never be the same even if they try to rebuild it. I just can’t imagine how horrible it must be. I mean people from Katrina are still in devastation even after all these years. I look around at my neighborhood and think what would it be like to see it all gone? Horrifying. Thank God you’re okay. We had the rain here that you didn’t get. Rain, rain and more rain. Just kept hooking in over the lakes from the North and hitting where I live along with the wind. Rained here from Monday all week until Friday morning. Was one big, nasty storm that reached so far out. But nothing here compared with what the East coast got for sure. God bless you all.

  63. Jodi from Maple Grove, MN says:

Please know, to all of you Matt followers on the East Coast, we are saying prayers for all of you and your family’s.

  64. Abby says:

Not sure where you are now, Matt, but sending positive vibes your way that you and your loved ones were able to ride out the storm safely. Take care!!!

  65. Joe says:

Matt:I hope you and your family are doing well. I have followed your walk from the beginning and love taking this journey with you. I purposefully had been lagging behind to savor your walk.It wasn’t until today that I saw your post about your family. I do hope that all is well.

I also hope that you and all the people of NY, NJ CT ( my home) and the East Coast are doing ok in light of this horrific storm.Prayers are with all of you.

Finally, Matt, I wanted to tell you that I am so inspired by your walk that I have started a trek of my own. In the small suburban New England Sombertown that I live in, I have made it my goal to see and travel every street by bicycle. I am currently about 40% complete and have been loving every minute of it. My only complaint is that I haven’t documented my travels photographically. But, to discover so many beautiful streets, buildings , yards, parks etc. in a place I’ve lived for for 40 years has been fun, inspiring and eye opening. Thank you for your inspiration. Good luck. I look forward to your return soon!

  66. Julie in Cincinnati says:

Has anyone heard from Joisy Jeff or Matt? I hope and pray that they and their families are safe.

    • Jeff in Joisy says:

Hay Julie. I could use some Gasoline. Waited 5 hours yesterday. Other then that God blessed me with a not so bad storm.
We had wind..Highest gust by me 85 mph. It did not realy rain..just wind, wind and more wind. We even had the Aurora Borealous…well not realy..it was transformers blowing up and wires shooting electrical arcs in the sky.

Hmm I think I will move to the dessert next time….

    • RAYMOND in ALABAMA says:

      Hello Julie!

  67. Matt wherever you are and whatever you’re doing today keep your head up and your feet dry. You’ve got friends here awaiting your return.

  68. I have been thinking of you, Matt and all of those dealing with Sandy and her aftermath. Do hope you and your family are doing better and hope you are able to be back walking soon. Best wishes from California to all those back East.

  69. Gigi says:

Thanks for the updates, Matt! I’m glad you and your family were spared from the wrath of Sandy. My heart and prayers go out to all those affected. Happy to hear you’ll be walking again the streets of New York by the middle of the month, even if only on a temporary basis. Take care!

  70. Jamie says:

Matt many of us have been thinking of you and your family. Glad to know you are safe. God Bless.

  71. TOM F. says:

Best wishes to you Matt, and to all your followers who may have been impacted by Sandy. (Gov. Christie said he’s not going to use the term “100-year storm” anymore, since we get one every year now.)

  72. Osvaldo says:

    Hi Matt,

I hope everything is alright with you and your family. I was watching the news about Sandy and wondering what happened to your walking. I hope you get back as soon as possible and maybe I will join again for a pleasant afternoon of some walk and talk. (I’m the Brazilian guy who walked with you in Queens along with 2 Dutch guys in May)

    Take care!

  73. Anna One says:

Best thoughts to you Matt. I have seen more of this country than I ever would have on my own because of you. I am very sad for all the devastation back east. Be safe and thanks….

  74. David says:

Family first. Hope everyone is OK.

  75. Karen Too says:

    Hi Matt,

It has been a long time since I’ve had a chance to pop over here, so I’m just now seeing this message.

As others have said, family first, and you are all in our thoughts.

I’m glad to know that you are safe from the wrath of Sandy, as I hope is the case with your many friends in NYC.

Also in our thoughts, of course, are those hard-hit by Sandy.

    All the best,

    Karen

  76. Joan says:

Sorry to hear you have troubling times. We all go through this, Matt, and you can get through it, too.
Will say a prayer or two for you and yours.
Bless you for your interesting work and witty comments about the sites you see.
You must write a book because the information you provide is really interesting and I would love to be able to sit down and have it all in paper form to enjoy and learn from a comfortable chair.
Good luck, and God Bless, Joan

  77. chris says:

Matt, I am so glad to hear that things are looking up for you and your family. I would like to think that all those prayers and positive vibes from your grateful readers has helped, but in any event, am glad to hear of the improvement. It is great to hear that you will be returning to your walk soon, even if it is only sporadic for the time being. All the best!

  78. Aussie Brad says:

    Hi Matt,

It was my birthday on the 18th. What a great present to know that things are going well with your family and that you’ll be back on the road soon. On the 17th I did a charity walk of 50 kms (about 31 miles give or take). I have a new appreciation on your efforts a couple of years ago on your walk across the States. Amazing effort!

  79. Gigi says:

So great to hear from you again, Matt, and to know all is going well with you and your family. It just makes this Thanksgiving week more special. Looking forward to your pics from your recent walk. I hope you have some pics of the fall foliage, some trees are still showing off their glorious colors.
