How do you know which ones to focus in on out of the gazillions of tombstones available?

    • Matt Green says:

I don’t usually research the places I go ahead of time, but I do often check to see if any well-known people are buried in the cemeteries before I walk them, and I’ll note the location of any graves I particularly want to see — like Mickey Welch’s, for example. But it also often happens that I take a photo of a monument/mausoleum just because it looks interesting, and then it turns out to have a crazy story behind it that I learn about after the fact, as was the case with the Scannell monument that I just posted about.

Sorry to say, not only was Mickey Welch not the first pinch-hitter, but Sept. 10, 1889, wasn’t even the first time he pinch-hit that season.
