A visit to the strange, sewerless world of the Hole generally involves navigating multiple stretches of flooded roadway. Fortunately, in this case, there was a raised area on the left side of the street that I was able to walk along.

    why no sewers? What about sanitation issues? Looks like a lovely wetlands restoration, actually.

      I think it’s because this area is too low-lying. This 2004 NY Times article mentions a plan to build sewers here, but says the land will have to be raised first. For the time being, the houses use cesspools, and rainwater just gathers at the low points until it seeps into the ground or evaporates.
