Stop SOPA and PIPA

I’m Just Walkin’ is down today.

I have decided to join countless other sites by blacking out for the day in protest of two bills before Congress: the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House of Representatives and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate. These bills take a heavy-handed, censorship-based approach to fighting online piracy, and, if enacted, would deal a severe blow to the health of the internet — the very medium on which you are reading this message.

I don’t consider this site an appropriate place for political statements — it is called I’m Just Walkin’, after all — but, given the scale of the protests going on today, I feel like I would also be making a statement by saying nothing. So I’d like to officially join millions of other people in opposition to SOPA and PIPA, and in support of the two values most integral to my walking: openness and freedom.

If you’re not familiar with SOPA and PIPA, I strongly encourage you to read more about these bills and come to your own conclusions. You can find good explanations of the dangers of SOPA and PIPA here and here. You can also visit Wikipedia and Google to read their objections to this proposed legislation.

Thanks for taking the time to consider these issues, and I’ll see you back on the road tomorrow.

Yours truly,

Matt Green
