Day 42

A night with the Amish

May 7th, 2010

I pulled over last night at the home of James and Jean, an Amish couple. James got one of his sons to go get me a cup of fresh goat milk while we were talking, and Jean cooked me some steak and eggs from their farm. I spent the night with James's parents, Lee and Mary Kathryn, in a little outbuilding on their property. Lee showed me some of his woodworking projects and talked with me on into the night. This morning Mary Kathryn made a big breakfast, and the three of us sat and chatted for a while, and I had the chance to ask a lot of questions about Amish culture.

This may have been the coolest part of our journey yet, my friend. Jealous.

  2. Mike Nye says:

Did you ask any questions about the accuracy of the 1996 Bill Murray/Woody Harrelson film Kingpin?

  3. Karen says:

What an opportunity. I’m like Ashley. Very jealow.

  4. Doris says:

    Now, how cute it that?

  5. Greg Hocevar says:

Are those windshield wipers?…Are they somehow attached to the wheels to make them work since they aren’t allowed to use electricity?…but really?…are those windshield wipers?

    • Matt Green says:

They are windshield wipers, but they’re hand-operated. They do have electric lights though. I just wrote a new post explaining that a little.

  6. How is it going pushing the cart? I guess nothing’s been as tough as getting across the GW bridge.

  7. Jonathan says:

If you cover roughly the top half of this picture, it looks like a tricycle parked next to two bicycles.

  8. Karen Too says:

Apologies to the first Karen to post here; I didn’t read every comment before making my first one. I’ve added the word “Too” after my name just now, and I didn’t start posting until today, May 28th. I have, obviously, been posting on older posts, so the only way you can tell the difference on them is by today’s date.

    Sorry!

  9. Sharon P says:

    I really like this photo.

  10. April Gould says:

I love this photo……one of my favorite so far. It tells a story just by looking at it. It would be awesome to show this toa grade school class and have them write a story about the picture…..can you just imagine the stories they may come up with????

  11. Laurenis says:

This is amazing. You must write a book….with pictures!

  12. Candice in Alabama says:

I love this photo too! Trying to catch up to your current day’s blog.

  13. Deb says:

Yes, but did they try to convert you? Me thinks not.

  14. katzien says:

Look….both buggies have three wheels! ;-)

  15. Barb V says:

The outbuilding Lee & Mary Kathryn live in is what the Amish call the Dawdy Haus, or grandfather house, which is nearly identical to the main house but smaller. Usually it’s attached to the main house. It’s tradition for the Amish to build this type of home for their parents to live in. Being very family-oriented, it’s a way for the elderly to remain active in the lives of their families. Their are many links about this you can find via Google.

  16. AL says:

what kind of farm is it where they grow steak and eggs?
