Day 136

The view from Cell Phone Hill

August 9th, 2010

The blog updates this morning were courtesy of this hill's elevation above its surrounding land. While I was sitting beside the road here, a guy pulled over to talk. He said he stops at this spot if he's driving through and needs to make a phone call. He also said that Mount Rainier would be visible from here (looking in the other direction) if it weren't so hazy.

I must be standing on top of a cell phone hill too, because I can’t believe I’m first again. What are the odds! It sure does look peaceful.

  2. Don in Tennessee says:

    Matt

You need to send this shot to VERIZON for the “Can you hear me now” commercial. Echo, Echo, Echo!

These pictures of Washington state minds me of a lot of Vincent Van Gogh Paintings, such as the above picture looks a lot like this http://www.vangoghgallery.com/catalog/Painting/745/Wheat-Field-with-Cornflowers.html

Yes! Wow, the similarity is uncanny. And I do love the movement and undulation of the hills and crop rows in this photo.

Nice catch, hks! That is very cool!

    • Dennis in So Cal says:

Van Gogh made that painting while attending Washington State University in Pullman on a football scholarship. He was an offensive lineman. He became famous for cutting his ear off after he missed a snap count and cost his team a win against the Washington Huskies. It was the tragic result of taking too many head slaps.

  4. Gigi says:

It looks so peaceful, love the shot!

  5. MN Roxanne says:

Matt, your endangered of earning the title “Photographer”.
(My father was Photographer and a Film Processor for years… Started out taking Aerial Photos for the Navy,
then commercial Aerials, started working for a Small photo processing plant which he worked at from 1968 until 2004 and learned and taught photography thru out his career.)
Even with that camera phone.. it shines on.
Makes me want hang this on my wall.
    Good Job.

  7. This reminds me of each time I come over to the States, when I visit my parents. They have a home in the middle of nowhere, which is wonderful. There is no cell phone reception on or near their property, so I must always walk [or drive] to a hilltop nearby, which is also nicknamed by the locals “Cell Phone Hill.” Beautiful photograph!

  8. Jeff says:

suppose you werent willing to stay for the haze to lift? Cell phone hill….I like this. People just show up at the right time don’t they. Walk on matt the end is near…but the adventure never ends.

  9. deb says:

    Beautiful shot, Matt!

  10. Candice In Alabama says:

They need to put a sign up there – Next Cell Phone Service Area ?? miles!

  11. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Wow. I really like this. I’m used to seeing this in green out this way. Nice rolling hillside. Glad you had some company for a few. But when I read that you could have gotten a shot of Mt. Ranier I was like “Ah shoot! Turn around anyways!” I wish I had a tool to make the pic turn around so he could have at least shot it in the direction of Mt. Ranier. Even if we couldn’t have seen the top of it I think it still would have been awesome to try to see. Darn haze! (was it Purple Haze ?)

  12. Angelica says:

Wow, how many hundreds of miles away is Mt. Rainier? That’s amazing! Too bad you couldn’t see it.
