  1. John in MI says:

    Gorgeous!

  2. katzien in austin says:

You’re closer and closer to civilization!

  3. Joanne says:

just want to wish you well on this final leg of your journey Matt. it has been an adventure I have enjoyed, thank you for sharing.

  4. Gigi says:

Don’t stop by and rest Matt, walk on, Rockaway Beach is waiting for you. I’m getting excited, too!

  5. MN Kirsten says:

Whose woods these are I think I know.
    His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there’s some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

    • Jennifer in KY says:

@MN Kirsten – my favorite Robert Frost poem!

Congratulations, Matt! You’re almost (or maybe already) there. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with a bunch of complete strangers (in the beginning) who’ve become like family! Good luck with whatever you decide to do next. Maybe you’ll keep us up-to-date??

  6. katzien in austin says:

And finally, after 151 days, not so many miles to go. Maybe just another hour or so??

  7. EDL in MN says:

    Matt,
    Congratulations! Almost there…
Nice shelter to keep out of the rain.

  8. John in MI says:

I do wish CNN would have one of those “Breaking News” deals, and show his walk to the beach live.

  9. Doris says:

Just about 3 more hours to go. Oh how exciting!

  10. Janine says:

The trees in the back are beautiful.

  11. I think Matt is bypassing Tillamook. He appears to be on Latimer Rd, which goes on the back side of the Tillamook Cheese Factory. I wonder, since he ate Tillamook ice cream last night, maybe he can pass it up. I mean he does have Bay City and Garibaldi yet to go through and it is not a straight shot, there is the bay he has to walk around. Well, we will soon find out. This picture was taken 2 hours ago so my guess he passed the cheese factory.

  12. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

LOL ! Yes it could double as a baseball dugout. Maybe that’s where it came from. Doesn’t look like it would protect much from the elements but maybe it’s the direction that it’s in that helps. I want to make some kind of joke about the sign, dead end, maybe it’s trying to say to you Matt that the dead end is near cause when you get to Rockaway it is the dead end. :( *waaaaaa!!!! crying : ( boo hoo hoo…

  13. charlie says:

someone posted, in the last photo, that he was just shy of 5 miles south of bay city, at 1030amPDT, which should put him in rockaway beach around 4-430pmPDT!!!

    • katzien in austin says:

How do youi know exactly where he is?

      • Steve in WI says:

My sister who lives in Garibaldi, OR called me and told me she saw him on the road just south of Bay City at 10:30 PDT

        • SLO Gail says:

Is he on 101? It looks pretty dangerous in that area – north of Tillamook. Hobsonville Pt. Rd from Bay City to Garibaldi might be safer. Worry, worry.

          • katzien in austin says:

Can we get someone in Bay City to go out to the 101 and look for him? I’m following the map and need some Matt-Sightings updates.

            • Jeff says:

God says he has his eyes on him, He is walking at his side. He says worry not…He’s got this covered.
At least that is what I prayed for.

              • Julie in Cincinnati says:

Thank you Jeff. I’ve been praying too, for quite awhile, for God to keep Matt safe.

              • Vickie from Michigan says:

                Psalms 139:1-3
“O LORD . . . thow knowest my downsitting and my uprising . . . Thow compasseth my path and my lying down and art acquainted with all my ways.”

      • RAYMOND in ALABAMA says:

Double click on last picture and bring it in closer

and you can see where he was at 2:09PM

I do not think he will make it today.

        • charlie says:

yes, that is what i said yesterday. it was 9 hours from where he was camping. that’s a whole day nonstop walking. according to the walking maps, the ‘bay city’ reference was still 9 miles, or 3 hours. and at 1030am/pdt, that would put it at 130pm/pdt or 430pm/est. somehow i dont know that he’ll do it in the next 45 minutes. and i’m sure the rockaway beach townsfolk (and his parents) are just sitting around waiting!

  14. It looks like Matt is going to keep posting pictures until the very end…just like him…he is thinking of us…even though it’s all about him…that’s a good trait by the way…

    • katzien in austin says:

I know! I was just thinking that he would usually post the day’s pictures all at once at night. I’m so glad that for the last day, he is posting as he goes along to Rockaway. I’ve got a glass of wine ready to raise up to Matt!

    • Michael in Atlanta says:

Have been thinking that myself. He is doing this day for us and it IS about him. Thanks for noticing Jim, and THANKS, MATT!

  15. Peacenik in Oregon says:

Thank you for providing a (better) reason (than money) to go to work this summer! I don’t have a computer at home on which to follow your voyage.
Congratulations, and welcome to the far coast…

  16. I guess we should all thank Jason Eppink for making this site for Matt? Thanks a million Jason! This site really is great and works so well with maps, pics, etc.

Also heard Matt’s girlfriend is coming to Rockaway with his parents, so maybe a nice thanks to her. It isn’t easy to see your fella take off for 6, 7 or 9 months. So thank you to girlfriend!

  17. CP in MI says:

I swear I checked in last night and there weren’t any new posts. Just got home from work and find several days have been updated.

Thanks for the journey Matt, waiting to celebrate the end with you.

  18. Brandy in CA says:

Been following at work silently for months. I’ve even recruited my co-worker and her mother to follow =)

Just wanted to say thanks Matt. It’s been a great journey!

  19. Got my Oregon map out. If I can believe it…from Bay City to Garibaldi is 4 miles. From Garibaldi to Rockaway is 5 miles!

If he was sited at almost to Garibaldi, then he will be in Rockaway before 2:00 I think! Unless he slows it down a bit. As I write this it is 12:02 in Oregon.

  20. Dave says:

    You my boy Matt!

  21. Stephen says:

I think I can smell the Pacific Ocean already. Maybe I’ll add a sprinkle of salt to my mineral water just to get in the mood. Can’t wait for Matt to turn walkin’ into wadin’.

    • Don in Tennessee says:

      Stephen

I konw what you mean about smelling the Pacific Ocean. I just had the Geek Squad install “Smeil-A-Vision” software on my compuiter yesterday. It is great!

  22. Don in Tennessee says:

Why would I want to use this bus stop to go to school from? It has a sign that says Dead End. Now how crazy is that! A dead end education.

Things never cease to amass me. Does look somewhat like a baseball type dugout. I bet if it is raining it souinds neat with that roof.

  23. Lois says:

Where does the bus go? It is a dead end!

  24. Christine says:

Very excited for Matt’s arrival in Rockaway Beach!! I really hope we can eventually see some footage. Just cracked a beer to celebrate. Thanks to everyone in the Hobo Nation for all the great comments over these past months.

  25. Janine says:

I’ve got this blog pasted to my computer screen, updating every few minutes. I feel like I’m at some cosmic event, like a meteor shower or an eclipse, waiting with throngs of people for the big show. *L* Go, Matt, go!

  26. I bet Matt’s heart is racing! I bet he feels like running. I bet his knees feel weak! I bet he wants to shout! I wonder how he is feeling at this exact moment?

    • John in MI says:

Karen, I think that’s how we all feel!

    • Jeff says:

Matt’s brain….”take another picture?” “should I put a wet suit on before my plunge?” “I hope the server does not go down”
      “i’ve just walked across america”.

  27. Robin in Oregon says:

My In-Laws just chatted with him again :) In Garibaldi. Getting close :)

  28. ohhhhhh a sghting! I thought he was past Garibaldi. Well, it won’t be long now……so I will add exhilarated to the list of how he might be feeling!

  29. katzien in austin says:

Oh right ON! Let me move my map! Dang…the suspense of the finish line is making me crazy. Tomrorrow will be such a let down, but I’ll check in anyway, as I’m sure many of us will. heehee

  30. John in MI says:

Pretty soon he can trade that bear spray in for a BEER spray! We need more chase planes.

  31. katzien in austin says:

Seven-ish miles to go?? Maybe one and a half, two hours to go? So 4:15 or 4:39 central time! Jeez, am I a dork for all my rambling postings? Hubby would say so…though not to my face. ;-)

    • Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

You’re not a dork, or at least not any more than the rest of us! lol. We’re all doing the same thing today, Matt sighting look outs all over the place. Waiting for every little tid bit we can get!

    • Don in Tennessee says:

      No-no dork! Nice person.

  32. John in MI says:

So will he walk down the Oregon Coast Highway? That would a really cool view for the last few miles.

    • Robin in Oregon says:

He’ll have a couple of views of the bay and the jetty, but his first solid ocean view will be in Rockaway.

      • John in MI says:

Thanks Robin. The anticipation during that walk would drive me nuts (knowing it’s there, but not being able to see it.)

  33. Janine says:

I dunno, I think I would walk a little slower, not really wanting it to end.

  34. Khandee in CA says:

I would like to say that I have followed Matt since New Jersey. This site is the most civil, generous, warm, friendly and caring website I have ever visited. Everywhere else I look there is doom and gloom and coming her to see the beautiful pictures Matt posted and read the comments from all of you have lifted me up. I will miss this site and all of you BUT I have bookmarked it so I am going to go back to the beginning and take me another trip. Anytime, I feel closed in, I only have to look at pictures of the “Big Sky”. Thanks Matt for allowing me to “just walk” vicariously with you.

  35. Khandee in CA says:

    ooops, “coming here”
