Day 12

Trans-Manhattan Expressway

January 11th, 2012

That's the little-used name of the mile of I-95 that runs across northern Manhattan. There are four nearly identical high-rise apartment buildings — the one you see here and three more lined up right behind it — and a bus terminal built atop the highway.

On top?!? What in the..?? Who builds on top of an expressway? And high-rise apartments at that?

  2. Dan says:

Yeah, that must suck to live up there! On the traffic report, they always mention if traffic is bad “under the apartments”…

  3. Pat says:

    That looks scarey!

Look at that Engineering feat!! And to think we can’t even get a bridge built across the Columbia connecting Oregon & Washington! Sheesh.

we have an office building over a freeway in atlanta. building was built before the freeway. they left a hole for the freeway.

We used to call them the bridge apartments when I was a kid, there are 4 identical buildings just like the one shown. We used to brave trick or treating there as it was obviously an efficient place as far as density of candy buckets but there were predators lurking. Bigger kids with socks full of chalk to bonk you on the head with if you didn’t hand over your candy. Wasn’t the best neighborhood to grow up in but i miss those days.
