Day 267

LIRR Sub-station 2

September 22nd, 2012

Here in East New York stands one of the five original substations built by the Long Island Rail Road around 1905 when it first began electrifying its tracks. Now abandoned, the substation will start to reveal its true identity to passersby a little later in the year.

    Hello!
According to the linked PDF the railroad is connected to the rest of the world at two points, the HellGate Bridge and via the area in Mott Haven. Over there is the Metro North Marshalling yards, (Once the New York Central yards.) what is interesting from that perspective is that the LIRR trains now could reach GCT via a peculiar path, if these tracks are still available. I know that Amtrak uses the HellGate Bridge for its New England service.
