It is that someone remembers… not the monument itself.
Wonder what kind of logistics went into planning your trip? Not that I would like to… well yeah, I’d like to try to walk somewhere..! That is why I am interested in your journey..!
This photo reminded me of the song Dakota! (Lyrics by Richard Sherman) from the Walt Disney movie “The One and Only Original Family Band.” They were singing apparently about South Dakota but it seemed appropriate for this picture. You probably need to be older than 45 to remember this movie….
“Where the roots grow deep and the winds blow clean; where the air is sweet and the summer’s green; where virgin fields await the plow, a great tomorrow is dawning now! Dakota!”
So while I was looking up the song I came across an article on the artist James Van Nuys http://www.jamesvannuys.com/pdf/vannuys_story.pdf (again South Dakota related) and some of his paintings reminded me of this photo as well. Coincidence? The artist’s grandmother wrote the book which the movie is based off of and Beth Palmer the author of the article lived “vicariously” through the movie.
Thanks Matt for the great photo and letting me step back down memory lane – I can’t get the song out of my head… “Where the roots grow deep and the winds blow clean; where the air is sweet and the summer’s green; where virgin fields await the plow, a great tomorrow is dawning now! Dakota!”
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
A lot of good pics today thanks for sharing
Wonder what the plaque is for?
That’s go to be some kind of meteorite! Did you run across a guy looking like Superman ;)
Is there anything written on that stone?
A stone grows in the field. So much for grass lands….
This is another wonderful shot…and why I love living your walk with you..
It is that someone remembers… not the monument itself.

So tell us what happened on that particular patch of earth.
