I think it is a railroad spike. A large ‘nail’ that was used to hold the track to the cross tie. It is just to the right of the tall weed in the foreground and very hard to see.
It’s the pole in there. Matt snapped several pics of those back in MN. He spots those babies from miles away it seems.
As far as the spike in the lower left corner? All I see is black pavement.
Aside from all the discussion about the pole — Matt is walking on the remnant OF the railroad — the raised trail he is on is right smack on top of the grade and ballast that the rails were built on. I’m just sayin… :)
AZ Bob: That was my first thought, but I think I see an old telegraph pole sticking up in the center background. I live along an abandoned RR track (trains haven’t run since the mid-60s), and we still have a few telegraph poles standing among the weeds.
Look at 3 and 9 o’clock on the photo – I see a possible stretch of track if you mentally connect behind the bushes in the center. This would also align with the grey pole.
I think it is early for budding Mary Jane.
Or so I’ve read
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
I found it.
hmm beats me Marshall, where is it?
In the middle behind the tree.
i thought so
I’m not sure what I’m supposed to see. I do see a pole with maybe a cross-bar. What’s it supposed to be? How is it associated with a railroad?
You see the same thing I saw. I believe it was a signal to alert the engineer to whether the track ahead is clear to proceed.
Thanks Marshall!
don’t see it
Is it the pole forlornly standing cause it lost its railroad crossing sign?
Is it the pole with the cross bar? hmmm………
It’s on the bottom left of the picture. We have a few around here also
I thought about THAT as well – the road perhaps…

I’m green, but not that green. I know what a snipe hunt is! :) Okay – well I’m green enough to Flickr Zoom to Original and TRY to see it! :)
very sneaky Matt… but I see the pole hiding in the bushes/weeds….

It’s a telegraph pole, no?
Try the MORSE CODE and see if you can send a message to Western Union.
Matt has really had a great eye with and without the camera.
