  1. Karen Too says:

According to this site, if they are the right kind, Matt could make himself some tea:

As others here have noted, there are many kinds, in lots of colors. Here are pictures of the yellow ones (and a few others that were in the shots):

    Am I first??!!

  3. Michael in Atlanta says:

LOL. Deb, you are shameless! WOOT! on being first.

  4. Gigi says:

Thank you for the flowers, they’re pretty as a summer’s day!

  5. Ashley in MD says:

Those remind me of the little buttercup flowers we used to put under our chin when I was little to see if it showed up yellow. They’re pretty though, I like the orange center.

  6. LaraPenny, CA says:

Aren’t they a poppy – our state flower is the CA Poppy here… which is more specifically orange – but I have seen the poppy in a few colors and two-toned…

  7. They look like they are growing right out of the cracks in the pavement! Did someone plant them there? Or are they wild?

  8. Jami says:

IT looks like a buttercup, but it’s kind of strange that it has only 4 petals. I’m really enjoying this portion of your walk as I grew up in Washington State and definitely miss it!

  9. Steph says:

    California poppies! Our state flower.

  10. bbum says:

That would be the classic California Poppy. Great flower. Grows everywhere, produces tons of seed. Will quite happily grow from the tiniest of cracks.

An example closeup of the flowers:

  11. Barb V from Michigan says:

I love the California state flower! Beautiful!

  12. Judo says:

i’ve got those growing all over my property …here in WA. They are poppies as others have noted. Very hearty and come back strong every year.

  13. Candice In Alabama says:

    Very Pretty!

  14. Hmmmmm, Johnny Poppyseed (from California) walked up Highway 14 dropping little poppyseeds from his burlap bag. Thanks Johnny for sharing!

  15. Ruthie in CA says:

On day 54 Matt took pic’s of Gloria’s garden…check it out

  16. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Beautiful flower and it looks like a planter box full of them only it’s a crack in the side walk. They grow pretty thick by the looks of these. Are they considered a weed because of this?

    • Jeff says:

How could a weed be so beautiful? Do we have a ugly duckling here?
I too like the way it was growing up from the cracks in the street. I love rock gardening…for this very reason.

  17. Belle Zora says:

These poppies are as numerous in California, where they are the state flower, as blackberries are in Washington

  18. Roe says:

They are beautiful, thanks, Karen too for the site.

  19. Barbara says:

They are primroses and abundant in Ashland, VA

  20. Janine says:

California poppies! We have whole festivals for them down here! They can be weedy because they’re native plants, very hardy and very prolific self-seeders; and when they grow where they’re not welcome, they’re weeds. Can’t be primrose or buttercup because the petals and leaves are wrong, see:

  21. katzien in austin says:

Gorgeous! In my yard, weedy and prolific is great. ;-)
