Hey Matt ~ I’m getting so excited because you are so close to my home state! We are planning on being in Rockaway to see you very very soon….you are really moving my friend!
Kier… I’m so glad to read that you’re going to be there to greet Matt at Rockaway… I was hoping to but he’s walking so fast, he’ll be done before I get there!! Gather bunches of folks and give him a warm welcome from all the Hobo Nation… we’re so proud of him!
Yay for Kier! So happy that you will be there to welcome Matt. Read in Flickr that the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce is also monitoring his walk. I’m hoping for a great reception when he gets there but you better move fast Kier, our hobo is eating up those miles.
I just noticed that on the big map at the top (without zooming out), you can fit both the latest picture pushpin and the Rockaway Beach dot. A sad realization, but probably not for Matt!
Okay, after some brief research on the Washington DOT site, I think this has something to do with water runoff around major waterways and salmon migratory paths. Maybe in the winter they aren’t supposed to use certain de-icers when these signs are present?
I just wanted to say Congrats for your journey! You have worked so hard for this. I have followed you since May. Everyday I”am excited to see what new pics you have posted and the angels across America. Have a safe rest of your trip Matt….
Great going, Matt! You’re moving so quickly…I say that from my perspective, I know! Love seeing the pictures you post each day! You may have to do something afterwards, as there will be severe withdrawl among your hobo clan.
ut ohh….showing your age. I was fond of Marge the trash heap myself. And bought the DVD’s so my kids could enjoy.
Postcards from the uncle who traveled all over the place if I remember correctly.
We are all so proud of you Matt!!! Way to go. I know I am not alone in thinking how sad it will be to see this journey end. I hope to travel the country someday – though I can’t walk it, but I WILL stop frequently to smell the roses and meet my fellow Americans. YOU, Matt, have reminded us all that we ARE one nation, there are still good people here who care about strangers and will do all they can to help. Your journey has made me proud to be an American again – THANK YOU!!!! And Thank YOU to your parents, family and friends for sharing you with all of us – we all truly appreciate it!
So this just leaves one question in my mind … HOW are you getting home? Car? Train? Plane? Maybe a southern walking route back home? I know the last one is too much.
Planes, trains and automobiles. Matt is flying home. He’s already told us that one. Then I guess he’d take a car from the airport but I know nothing of NY and where Matt may be going to when he gets home. So, maybe even a train-transit train? But Matt is taking a plane flight home for sure.
well he could actually walk. He does not have much luggage. A rubbermaid toat…a three wheeled cart (that should go in the smithoanian if you asked me) and well he would have just put in 3100 miles plus….why not walk home to rockaway beach. Maybe a hour or two at most. Everyone walks in New York. Come visit us ..!!
Yes we do don’t we? Welcome to it Sue in NY. Glad you came along for the journey. We are quite the bunch here if you’ve been silently following along at all. If not it’s okay. Hope you’ve gone back and looked at all the past postings. Matt is an awesome photographer. He needs to make that his next career move.
Looks like Matt is out of range again today. This hobo fanatic is keeping busy with the usual Saturday chores of grocery shopping, etc. but keepin’ an eye on the planet! Hope for pics soon.
Welcome Larry from N.J. to the hobo planet. Glad you’ve been following along. And even more so that you’ve posted. Jeff will be excited to see another represent the garden state there.
I will? ok…then .. Welcome fellow person from my wonderful, almost bankrupt – income tax rip-off state of New Joisy.
Are you a Larry from Pompton Lakes…?
darn weather. always throwing a wrench in things. I was wondering why the slow pace…and that could have alot to do with it. Early on when he would do certain things he would say “record..93 degree’s and 20 miles” or something like that. Would be more accurate but I think (and I could be wrong) there are close to 1500 pictures uploaded already over at Flickr
Looking at the red line map, it seems like Matt’s still moving…it looks like he’s in Maryhill right now…wonder if he can see the winery up on the hill…hopefully he’s hydrated…it’s just plain hot out there.
Sounds like the heat wave we had here that just broke… I trust Matt will have all he needs to stay hydrated… wish it wouldn’t be so hot for him… I hope Robin and other folks that know of his walk-about will seek him out and bring refreshments!
That’s funny. Deanna you ask if he can see the winery and both you and Roxanne hope he is hydrated. Can you see the funny in that? If he’s near a winery I would think he’s plenty hydrated! Maybe even a little inebriated??? Nah, I don’t think, or at least I hope not, that Matt drinks that much. I just found it funny, near a winery and drinking plenty.
I’m such a basket of emotions. While I’m happy Matt’s is so close to his destination, I’m sad that Matt is close to his destination. I really do hope this site/blog continues. We’ve all traveled this journey together and I hate for it to come to an end. Has anyone heard if there are plans to keep this going?
Jason said he presumed this site would be up for a year but that they need to discuss it. First priority is Matt finishing this walk. But I am sad to see it come to an end. I like seeing all the new pics. Maybe when he gets back to NY he’ll start a sister site to this? What that would be I don’t know, I am not a technical person at all so don’t know how all this blog stuff works.
Aw come on Jeff, I want to be a “blog virgin” just a little longer please? I really am only posting comments as the pics are posted. Is that all there really is to blogging? If it is then I guess I have to concede that I’m no longer a “blogging virgin”. ha ha.
on my way….were we gonna meet. How far we gonna go? Got to give me about four hours to get there via plane..and add a hour to make it off the Tarmack in Newark…..ahh heck….we all take a hour walk today and think of Matt doing his 20 something. Safety in numbers.
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
Something about fish…. interesting???
Hey Matt ~ I’m getting so excited because you are so close to my home state! We are planning on being in Rockaway to see you very very soon….you are really moving my friend!
MN Roxanne ~ according to the computer clock we did tie this time (-; You are one fast lady … referring to posting 1st only LOL
honestly… I just turned on that site… I was doing emails and thought I’ll check in… not trying to be “fast”
Kier… I’m so glad to read that you’re going to be there to greet Matt at Rockaway… I was hoping to but he’s walking so fast, he’ll be done before I get there!! Gather bunches of folks and give him a warm welcome from all the Hobo Nation… we’re so proud of him!

10 days (?) to Rockaway – WOW!
the count down is on… happy for Matt , sad that it’s going so fast…..
i would stop the red line if i did what my heart told me to do. but our Matt deserves to get to Rockaway. He has worked hard for this.
I just noticed that on the big map at the top (without zooming out), you can fit both the latest picture pushpin and the Rockaway Beach dot. A sad realization, but probably not for Matt!
and we are leaving for vacation tomorrow for 8 days , I sure hope I don’t miss Matt’s big splash!
Interesting sticker indeed. Some weird fish in there? Dead fish? Sleeping fish? No fish? Lazy fish? I know! Go fish!
Yikes! The dreaded upside-down salmon wearing lipstick sticker. Now all we have to do is figure out what it means.
looks kinky. avoid it like that video store back a ways, Matt.
it aint natural!
the FISHmanity!
omg. Matts site just told me to slow down!
Okay, after some brief research on the Washington DOT site, I think this has something to do with water runoff around major waterways and salmon migratory paths. Maybe in the winter they aren’t supposed to use certain de-icers when these signs are present?
Well that does sound good John but why is it so low to the ground then? And the top of this post is cut off? hmmm…
I think originally it was painted blue, and the paint has worn off.
For some reason, this is the image I have in my mind of what Matt will see as he reaches the Pacific.

sure looks inviting John…. I’d go for a swim there!
This is what I envision Matt will see at Rockaway Beach, OR.

John, that’s weird….
I kinda expected this vision of matt reaching the beach…

What a great image Craig! Now that’s a boat I’d like to skipper.
So excited you’re almost there Matt! :) I’ll be in the White Salmon/Hood River area tomorrow. Hopefully, I’ll see you.
180 miles to go. 96% complete.
It’s the manufacturer – http://www.carsonite.com/
But, why the fish – I don’t know.
I just wanted to say Congrats for your journey! You have worked so hard for this. I have followed you since May. Everyday I”am excited to see what new pics you have posted and the angels across America. Have a safe rest of your trip Matt….
Wow! I’ve been gone for 2 1/2 weeks with very limited internet access and I can’t believe how much farther you’ve gone, Matt! Congratulations!
@shannon: i really like your blog
Good luck with your ‘step count’ today Shannon. Looks like you’re really making every step count with your own personal journey.
I wonder if the residents of Rockaway Beach know of Matt’s story and upcoming arrival?
Great going, Matt! You’re moving so quickly…I say that from my perspective, I know! Love seeing the pictures you post each day! You may have to do something afterwards, as there will be severe withdrawl among your hobo clan.
hehe my husband says hobo Matt should be “traveling Matt” like the fraggle in Fraggle Rock!

me too Dorinda… at least we know it’s just an out of range day… the end is coming too soon…
Oh I know, way to soon for us and probably not soon enough for Matt.
Matt, Been watching silently for 4 months now. Wish you could walk back home to N.Y. also. Great, Great journey. I enjoyed it. Thank you.

Now now Jeff, be nice. At least your state isn’t as bad as California(at least I think it isn’t). But what do I know about Joisy? I live in Ohio!.
Looks like it was broken off and stuck back in the ground upside down, don’t know what it s though
You know you may be right. That would explain why the fish and the writing look upside down. And yeah, still don’t know what it’s for.
Maybe a break day- as its close to 100 f today through tues…

wow, 1500 pics (so far)!! that is gonna make for one HUGE coffee table book!

You keep saying that ..but you know you are expert blogger at this point! you have thrown out some good ideas too..
good morning! Happy sunday to all.
Maybe he could take pictures of his frequent walks around NYC once he gets back. That would be cool too.
Aw come on Jeff, I want to be a “blog virgin” just a little longer please? I really am only posting comments as the pics are posted. Is that all there really is to blogging? If it is then I guess I have to concede that I’m no longer a “blogging virgin”. ha ha.
I’m going to be so sad when this is over, Anyone want to go for a walk?
