Day 145

Multnomah Falls: The Standard Photograph

August 18th, 2010

According to a sign at the falls:

"September 4, 1995 at about 5:30 p.m., a 400-ton rock slid from the face of upper Multnomah Falls and dropped 225 feet into the Falls upper plunge pool. Weighing as much as a school bus filled with concrete, it sent a 70-foot splash over the Benson Bridge-- drenching a wedding party."

So beautiful! Really love that bridge up there.

  3. Jeff says:

Better to have drenched the wedding party then to have fallen ontop of them.

    • Ei says:

My thoughts too except I thought “Better to have been drenched than squished.”

    • Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Would that be considered a bad omen or good omen for your marriage? Splish splash but not squished.

    • Craig.. (Yeah in NC!) says:

I want to see the video of *that*.

  5. I guess that would have drenched anyone around there…and a little scary too…maybe a visit to the restroom for some…

  6. EDL in MN says:

I bet that falling rock was quite a surprise for the wedding party!

  9. Candice In Alabama says:

Nothing standard about his photograph – I’d say outstanding!

  10. Rings bells, did I read that? These falls are beautiful in winter too, sometimes they freeze. I think. Do they?

    • Ashley in MD says:

I would think that they dont freeze because the water is always moving, just my guess

      • Kherri CLT via PDX says:

Karin, I was thinking that, too when I was looking at this photo.
Ashley, it does freeze in the winter. Not to the point that the falls stop, but it has massive ice build up and is fantastically beautiful.

  11. April says:

You should try stopping at Voodoo Doughnut for something to eat — 22 SW Third St., Portland (downtown, just south of Burnside—ask anyone how to get there). http://voodoodoughnut.com/menu.php

  12. Julie in Cincinnati says:

This picture is absolutely breathtaking!! What more could could you want in one picture besides a waterfall and a bridge. This is amazing!!!

  13. Flavia says:

i wonder how long Matt stops for when he finds scenery this beautiful… does he stay long enough to take a picture or does he sit awhile and take in the scenery? just a thought.

  14. MN Roxanne says:

So glad the wedding party just got drenched…. they say rain on your wedding day is a blessing… not sure is a wave counts… it’s a beautiful picture Matt…. one of many along this trek.

  18. Alisa 11 says:

Welcome to Oregon Matt!!! And a picture of one of my favorite spots!! I hope we get to see you soon :)

  19. Dorinda from Mentor, Oh. says:

Wow that’s one huge tall waterfall. Do you climb up to that bridge some how? It looks like one long hard climb. Beautiful falls though.

    • Kherri CLT via PDX says:

There is a trail that goes all the way to the top of the falls where there is a platform that jets out over the top of the falls. The trail is around 1.2 mls. A bit of a hike but not to bad.

  20. Don in Tennessee says:

I guess that marriage got off to a rocky start! At least you could get stoned after the wedding and maybe forget about the rocky start.

This is another great bridge and beautiful waterfall. I would love to hear the water falling!

    Thank you, Matt!

  21. Bryan says:
