Mott Avenue Station

December 1st, 2012

This is the former entrance to the Bronx's first subway station, which opened in 1905. What was then Mott Avenue has been part of the Grand Concourse since 1927; this station is now known as 149 Street-Grand Concourse. One of the most popular graffiti writers' benches of the 1970s and '80s is located here, on the uptown platform of the 2 and 5 trains.

I'm walking every street in New York City.

This is the counterpoint to my walk across the US. Instead of seeing a million places for just a minute each, I'm going to spend a million minutes exploring just one place. By the time I finish walking every block of every street in all five boroughs, I'll have traveled more than 8,000 miles on foot — all within a single city. Details!
