Rails riding the rails
August 13th, 2010
I'm walking across America.
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so. If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out. If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania. You can read all about the details of my trip if you're so inclined.

#2. it appears that there are rail tracks on both sides of this river, so i am not sure he is on the oregon side because i cant see where he would be walking but on the washington side there is rte 14.
He’s on the Washington side. The previous sign “Treaty Fishing Access Site” is in Washington. If you go into Google Maps Street View – on the Google Maps site, not on Matt’s site – you can find that sign.

Matt is steps away from the final state. Pool ends soon and postings will begin..I keep saying it…and I will get to it.
Yeah really Jeff, get with it man! ha ha. Have we passed anyone’s guess date yet? I thought there was someone who had a day this past week picked? Would be nice if you just post a week at a time..Like what dates this week so and so has picked. That way it’s not all at once. Would give us something else to count down to.
Dorinda, I picked Oct 31st. I’m going to be really off. I swear that Matt picked up speed once he got across Montana.
I also thought he would take a few days off, but on the other hand I can understand how he felt== the end isin sight, so get the job one!!!!
I’m telling you he’s been hopin’ that train! lol. I know what you mean though. I thought he’d take some more time off along the way and he didn’t. And I’m sure now he won’t because the end is to near. You know you can always pick another day unless Jeff has closed down the “Poll” already. I picked Labor day and I think even I’m going to be off.!
I was beginning to wonder, Jeff. Who wins if the more than one person picks the same actual arrival day? Are you asking for TOA as well?

This is pretty wild looking. Is it water and mountains I’m seeing through the rails on the train? Or is it reflections of something? Really wild looking shot here Matt.
A roll-off car.
All the rails are on rollers and can be pulled off and laid down next to where rails are being replaced……Pretty cool to watch.
It’s called continuous welded rail. They’re typically around 500 yards long. Minimizes the number of rail joints, which is easier on the wheels, easier on the rail, and eliminates the familiar clickety-clack train sound (which gets a bit annoying if you live near the tracks). It’s fun to watch these cars go around a curve. You think steel is pretty rigid until you see how smoothly it bends as the train rounds a curve.

I saw these! Or maybe just something like it. Wonder if they are the same ones though, because it really was a crazy sight.
