I pulled over last night at the home of James and Jean, an Amish couple. James got one of his sons to go get me a cup of fresh goat milk while we were talking, and Jean cooked me some steak and eggs from their farm. I spent the night with James's parents, Lee and Mary Kathryn, in a little outbuilding on their property. Lee showed me some of his woodworking projects and talked with me on into the night. This morning Mary Kathryn made a big breakfast, and the three of us sat and chatted for a while, and I had the chance to ask a lot of questions about Amish culture.

Are those windshield wipers?…Are they somehow attached to the wheels to make them work since they aren’t allowed to use electricity?…but really?…are those windshield wipers?
They are windshield wipers, but they’re hand-operated. They do have electric lights though. I just wrote a new post explaining that a little.
How is it going pushing the cart? I guess nothing’s been as tough as getting across the GW bridge.
It’s pretty easy here in the Midwest. There are some hills, but they’re nothing compared to PA (or the GW).
If you cover roughly the top half of this picture, it looks like a tricycle parked next to two bicycles.

I love this photo……one of my favorite so far. It tells a story just by looking at it. It would be awesome to show this toa grade school class and have them write a story about the picture…..can you just imagine the stories they may come up with????

The outbuilding Lee & Mary Kathryn live in is what the Amish call the Dawdy Haus, or grandfather house, which is nearly identical to the main house but smaller. Usually it’s attached to the main house. It’s tradition for the Amish to build this type of home for their parents to live in. Being very family-oriented, it’s a way for the elderly to remain active in the lives of their families. Their are many links about this you can find via Google.
what kind of farm is it where they grow steak and eggs?
