there are several of these in middletown and stephens city, VA. some of the downspouts at the curb are supported on trees, like this one. but many have artificial supports that look like flag poles–minus the flag. there are some things that they just don’t teach in drainage design in civil engineering school.
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.

That’s a lot of work just to water a tree, maybe they were concerned about people tripping over a hose :)
