awwww, that poor little baby. I feel sorry for it. I wish I was there to take care of it.

  2. Joe says:

This picture brings back many childhood memories. I grew up in the country and have seen this before, creatures sitting dead looking at me. It as if they have given up the will to fight and know that a predator will come along sooner or later to devour them. All the sadness of an entire life can be summed up in their expression.

  3. Jennifer says:

poor birdie. Wonder what type of bird that is.

  4. Tena says:

aww that makes me so sad….I hope he was peaceful.

  5. Barry says:

    Hmmm-looks like a Chickenhawk.

  6. Nancy Kibler says:

you should of taken him with you remember the bird man of alcatras(whatever) cant spell. he would of been your road buddy

    • Mike Hamilton says:

Good call Nancy.. I was thinking the same thing. But Nature has it’s own agenda. I was thinking how a bird can make us all feel compassion, but not for our fellow man. God moment in there somewhere… jmho..

  7. Chris says:

    That looks like a Black-capped Chickadee…

  8. Shannon says:

Poor baby, such a look of despair.

  9. James says:

it is a chickadee for sure. The birds are so smart. I’m an optimist and he’ll do great!

  10. Eric says:

Its a fledgling, the parents kick them out and its on their own to learn to fly from there.

  11. R says:

what a beautiful photograph. i love what you’re doing here.

  12. Sandra says:

    what happened next Matt?

  13. Catherine says:

He looks like a little fledgling chickadee– still has the “baby” beak look. Hard to know if his little leg is deformed, broken or ?? Poor little guy.
We have had many a one legged bird visit feeders over the years and they do well, so perhaps this little guy (if alive) may do just fine.

Continue to enjoy your journey….stay safe, well and continue to enjoy the sun on your neck, wind in your hair, birdsong in the morning and evening and sights along the way

  14. Terry Rainwater says:

I am genuinely impressed that someone would do what you are doing – just because….. I hope all goes well for you and that every corner brings another great moment for you.

  15. Jackie Hastilow says:

This is realy awesome what you are doing! may god lead you to safe landings! I will be following you good luck!

  16. La Kisha from the East says:

I think that bird is an eagle? Or maybe a flamingo. Because it’s so cute!!! I love it <3.

  17. Chuck says:

Still watchin, Matt! ‘still think you’re awesome, Brotha! As a matter of fact, ‘thinking ’bout joining you……if you would like that and be ok with it. ‘dont wanna rain on yer parade but I have a dog….DAsY and she would luv it…..as would I. whatya think?! Has anyone else offered to join you?

  18. Karen Too says:

I’ve said it before on here, Matt. Animals keep finding you an endless source of curiosity. I love that! There are many black-capped chickadees in my yard.

They are fairly gregarious birds, and, while sitting on the porch, I’ve had one come sit on my head, at two different times.

  19. Kyla says:

this picture made me sad. :(
    keep goin strong, Matt!!

  20. Laurenis says:

At first I thought, this bird is not liking you on its turf. But then I realized he might be hurt… I say put him on your shoulder and keep walking. By the end of your journey, you may have a whole animal/forest clan with you!
