Day 97

Morrie and John

July 1st, 2010

They stopped to give me a half gallon of V8 Splash and a lucky dollar, and Morrie really wanted to give me his camera tripod as well, but I didn't have room for it. He also insisted that I be in the picture with them. And, finally, you may be interested to know that they once helped a group of Hare Krishnas push an organ two miles up a mountain in Idaho.

  1. John in MI says:

Everywhere you turn in this country, you’ll find kind and generous people. And I agree with John (I’m guessing that’s him in the back), I don’t want to grow up either.

  2. Steph says:

Love the beanie-copter. I want one!

  3. Ming the Merciless says:

Big deal! I once knew a guy who chased a salmon up Niagara falls, and you wanna know why? Because it was yae big, see.

  4. Jodi Dills says:

Matt, I’ve been following you when time allows. I love your blog, your quest and your photos. You are an inspiration. Don’t suspect we’ll see you on your trek as we are in the middle of the city of Seattle but our door would be open and you would be welcome if the need arose. Good luck in your life and pursuits.

  5. Julie says:

I bet these two are a couple of characters, with MANY stories to tell 8-) I would love to sit down for a couple of beers with em an just listen…LOL

  6. Saun in Ohio says:

  9. Craig from Iowa says:

Helping Hare Krishnas push an organ up a mountain in Idaho! Sounds like something from a Tom Waits song. I love it!

  10. Jim in AR via MN says:

I think their story of pushing the organ…sounds like echoes of a “Laurel and Hardy” film I once saw…did they ever get it up the mountain?…I think Laurel and Hardy had tough luck…

    • Kevin says:

That was the hilarious The Music Box, and I hope the organ stayed at the top of the mountain, unlike the piano L and H were trying to move!

  11. Jeff says:

And Matt’s mom would be proud he got his fruit and vegetable intake for the day. Matt the Magnet strike again.
    Goodness begets Goodness.

  12. Chantal in Vegas says:

    Very cool!

  13. katzien in austin says:

John’s tee is right…..I’m laughing! This blog is the best part of my day. Love you Matt!!

  14. Diane in Sugar Land, Texas says:

I don’t wanna grow up either, John! What a nice couple! I can’t wait to buy your book with all the beautiful pictures and add it my collection of great books. Would you stop by our hometown when you decide to walk thru Texas…on your next adventure to the South? My husband told me about you. He has been following you daily wishing he could be there walking taking pictures with you. It takes great courage to do what you do. I envy you. Wishing you a safe & healthy journey. Best of luck, Matt.

  15. Earl says:

i dare say that the most interesting and crucial will be western Montana and the Rockies, the altitudes you might encounter….

  16. Janine says:

    Must love Morrie and John.

  17. Mark in NC says:

Hey all, I did a search of I don’t wanna grow up and found all this – http://www.bing.com/search?srch=105&FORM=AS5&q=i+don't+wanna+grow+up&adlt=strict. There’s even a t-shirt with the same phrase.

  18. Mark in NC says:

The enire link did NOT work so highlight it, copy and paste it into your browser.

  19. Don in Tennessee says:

    Matt
I can only imagine what it was like meeting these 2 characters. Morrie has a Coors Beer cap on but he probably drinks PABST BLUE RIBBON. John probably drinks a shot of Tequlia with each beer. I will bet they could have you laughing so hard your side would hurt with some of their tales.

Again-these are the real people of Amercia-not the stuff shirts in Washington, DC who think we are all a bunch of idiots!!!

With John’s hat behind you, you now have the wind at your back so press on to Rock Away Beach, OR!

  20. I thought this was a new ‘Just for Men” hat club!

  21. mindy says:

i feel that this day’s photos are the best, so far (maybe)

  22. Wild Wizzard says:

My Uncles….As a kid John and Morey were probably the worst role models a kid could have. If as Don in Tennessee states “these are the real people of America” it’s no wonder our country is in the shape it’s in. Seriously, they are family and I love them but, think Jackass without the cameras multiplied by one million and you may have a fair representation of the boys of summer.

  23. Wild Wizzard says:

Seriously though, it is a good picture…….:-)
