I was fascinated and delighted to see this. In the late 70’s and early 80’s, I lived in NYC, and had a number of odd jobs, some of which required the disposal of job-related trash, which we brought to Ganesvoort. But I always thought that it was the Ganesvoort DesPuctor Plant. Because that’s what the sign says. I never noticed that the stem of the “R” had broken off. My family and I were so amused by this, that we have referred to the dump, wherever we’ve lived, as the Despuctor.
There is an episode in the old Naked City television show the has a scene in the Gansevoort Destructor Plant. The episode is “Susquehanna 4-7568” . It was filmed in 1958
This is the counterpoint to my walk across the US. Instead of seeing a million places for just a minute each, I'm going to spend a million minutes exploring just one place. By the time I finish walking every block of every street in all five boroughs, I'll have traveled more than 8,000 miles on foot — all within a single city. Details!
Your donations allow me to keep walking full-time. If you think what I'm doing is valuable and you'd like to offer some support, I would be very grateful. On the other hand, if you think I'm a worthless bum, feel free to email me and tell me to get a job, bozo. Both are excellent options!
