My first job was at a BK in the Chicago burbs. We also sold bags of ice, for 89 cents at the time, and they sold surprisingly well. My friends would come through the drive-thru, buy a bag of ice from me, and then dump it all over my car.
Just discovered your website. Hope you’re having a fun trip — keep up the cool pictures of mailboxes!
I see that you were likely in Evanston, IL by the look of that BK. The story I heard while I was at Northwestern (and maybe this is an Urban Legend), is that selling ice allowed them to qualify for “convenience store” status, and therefore stay open 24 hours. This, as you can imagine, is very good for their business, especially in a town inundated with college kids and grad school.
I used to use the ice vending machine in Southport, North Carolina, when I lived there last year. I thought that was odd, too. You could fill a 10 lb bag for 75 cents, or fill your truck cooler for $5! It made ice on location!
Now I’m bugging out about that bicycle locker. LOL
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
They must need business in that part of the country …

I love your friends.
LOL.

After some preliminary googling, I can’t find any reference to this, but it’s an intriguing explanation and I want to believe it!
The one Mc D’s near here does now for like .99 cent for 10lbs.. very strange, no more buys ice and beer and chaser at the dang corner store anymore?
I am just outside Kansas City and the McDonalds here all sell bags of ice as well. Maybe its a midwest thing? It is quite odd.
It must be a southern thing, too, because the McDonald’s in Flatwoods, KY, also sells ice for $1.00 a bag!
