Day 58

Tent caterpillars

May 23rd, 2010

These horrible monsters are all over southern Wisconsin right now. I bet I literally saw half a million of them smushed on the road today.

  1. Brian says:

Yuck. And they build ugly web nests that kill trees.

  2. Janet says:

Better dead on the road than killing trees! Nasty little things although I do love all of God’s little creatures!

  3. Angela says:

I loved playing with these things when I was little.

  4. Loved batting their tents down as a kid – like gross pinatas – and setting the writhing creeps on fire. What earthly purpose do they serve? Ugh.

  5. Evelyn says:

I would not have been able to sleep with all those around. YUCK!!

  6. Bob Williams says:

Pennsylvania was hit especially hard by them in 2006, 7 and 8. They killed multiple 200+ year old oak trees at my old house by eating the leaves in consecutive years. Good luck Wisconsin.

  7. Karen Too says:

They are in my yard right now. I don’t like killing things, but I had to resort to spraying as they were/are attacking the plants, trees, me.

Before spraying, you couldn’t sit outside for a minute without having some on you.

  8. Candice in Alabama says:

I hope none of the land on you…

  9. Don’t caterpillars grow up to be beautiful butterflies?? I especially don’t like Gael’s comment above. Sounds pretty sadistic to me.
