Just remember this Matt – if the overcast sky has lumpy cloud bottoms – be careful – lumpy cloud BOTTOMS indicate turbulent winds which could mean BAD weather (tornadoes, etc). I took meteorology in college as well. I just can’t remember the names of those cloud bottoms – but I know what it means if you see them.
Well – I thought I learned they indicated bad weather – according to my link – they don’t, I could have sworn they DID: Sometimes very ominous in appearance, mammatus clouds are harmless and do not mean that a tornado is about to form; a commonly held misconception. In fact, mammatus are usually seen after the worst of a thunderstorm has passed.
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
Such a great photo Matt. I think you should re-think your career. You could be the “Walking Photographer” :)
I am sure he is thinking that …what a shot, looks like you might get some fireworks afterall.

Oh well – I don’t know what to believe anymore – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammatus_cloud, I’ll still be taking cover if I see Mammatus clouds.
I like your description as “lumpy cloud bottoms,” Candice. Sounds like something we women should look out for as we age.
