Day 102

The fourth on the fifth

July 6th, 2010

Katy and Kelly saw me at the grocery store in Glendive and recognized me from a news story. They were visiting their parents, who conveniently live just off the road I'd be walking, and they invited me over for the evening. After some pizza, beer, s'mores, and Scotch, I decided to declare last night my official July 4th celebration!

Left to right: Gary, Kelly, Katy, Maureen

And America’s kindness and hospitality continues. Further proof that the majority of Americans are really good, honest, caring people. May God bless you all.

  2. Pacis says:

After 18,460 miles of riding last year across America one thing stood out-Nice people aren’t hard to find and when alone on the road, they find you.

    Godspeed.

  3. katzien in austin says:

Aw, thanks for sharing your home and bounty with Matt! Now, let’s all follow Gary to Cozumel! I need a vacay.

  4. Jeff says:

Now that is the report we have all been waiting for!

    • Don in Tennessee says:

      Jeff

Could you give the site out for posting an ETA for Matt in Rock Away Beach, OR and the exact info. you want on the site again? Hope all is well. The Yuengling supply is getting low so I need to have the local distributor deliver another semi load to get me through the weekend!

      Stay cool!

  5. Karen Too says:

Sweet, kind people with beautiful smiles, beer and scotch, pizza and s’mores. Perfect combinations.

Thanks to this family, like so many others, for taking care of Matt, and for providing his fourth on the fifth.

  6. Michael in Atlanta says:

Way to go Katy and Kelly and their parents! Happy 4th, Matt.

  7. Michael in Atlanta says:

Been thinking about this one….two girls bring a guy home out of nowhere. MOM, DAD!!!! Can we keep him? Awww, just feed him some s’mores? Please?

    Very nice people.

  8. Candice in Alabama says:

Matt – glad you had a happy 4th and that you are safe and well!

  9. Katy and Kelly in MT says:

We were happy to have Matt hang out with us! Our parents hosted many guests from the road during our youth and set a very generous example. We just happened to be visiting from MN and recognized Matt from a news story when he passed near the Twin Cities. Michael, your comment cracked me up! Our husbands were impressed that they had left fewer than 12 hours earlier and we already brought a new man home. :)

    • LOL !!! You girls don’t look old enough to be married! And it runs in the family as Mom looks pretty darn young herself too! Must be all that fresh clean living out there.
Thanks for sharing your home with Matt. Glad you got to meet him. Must have been a nice treat to meet someone you read about in the paper in MN and then finding him in MT.

    • Mom says:

Thank you and your parents for being so kind to our son. Mom and Dad really appreciate it!

    • MN Roxanne says:

Awesome that you recognized Matt and invited him over…. I did the same thing- invited him to my parents home since it was on his route. Montana is a big state so it’s wonderful that Matt got an invite right away! Thanks !!

  10. sandy repke says:

thanks katy an kelly for inviting matt in.. glad you did celebrate with pizza an scotch.. be safe.

  11. tim says:

    A memorable 4th.

  12. Dennis in So Cal says:

The scenery in North Dakota and Montana has been breathtaking, but it also seems to be a bit desolate. The hospitality that people have shown you has been amazing. I’m glad you got to do some celebrating!

  13. mojinator says:

    way to go Matt! ^^

  14. Don in Tennessee says:

    OH NO!

You are in Cozumel. The GPS is not working. Too much scotch and not enough Tequila! Were you able to get the Cozumel shirt as a souvenior?

Glad you were able to celebrate the 4th on the 5th with a fifth and with what seems to be a very warm and friendly family. Keep on truckin’ – I mean stepping!

  15. Men Style says:

I`m glad that you are safe and finding very good people

  16. bob says:

    What kind of scotch?

  17. Doris says:

I’m so glad to hear Matt found some kind and caring people. If I could, I would have kept that nice man at my

house forever. Baxter and I enjoyed his visit so much. I loved feeding and talking to him. But then again, I like

feeding everyone who comes to my home. I just enjoyed it more with Matt. I hated to see him leave. Matt please

be safe and walk on my friend. It won’t be long before you reach destination.

  18. Jamie says:

    Matt,
I am a little jealous that you got to spend an evening with Kate and her family enjoying Gust Hauf Pizza, Drink, and Laughter. I have spent many a day at this house and it is one of the warmest, welcoming places on earth. Enjoy the rest of your adventure!
    Cheers to Glendive!

  19. Janine says:

Thank you Gary, Kelly, Katy, and Maureen for taking care of our Matt!

  20. len grasso says:

I am originally from Morris County, NJ and have lived in Oregon for 29 years.

When you finally get to Oregon, stay awhile.

You may find you like the “Pacific Wonderland” better than your liked the “Big Apple” or the “Garden State”.

There is much, much less freedom in the East.
