Day 111

Awesome mailbox #39

July 16th, 2010

Its awesomeness is threefold:

1) It's an ingenious solution to the snow-plow-knocking-over-the-mailbox problem: mount the mailbox on a spring to absorb the impact of the plowed snow. I've seen several mailboxes like this, so this photo is a tribute to all of them.

2) It's resourceful. The springs used for this type of mailbox all seem to have been salvaged from old pieces of farm equipment.

3) It's visible in the previous weather station photo.

  2. Karen Too says:

Another “animated” awesome mailbox (as in the one I thought was about to get up, and walk away). Love it.

  3. Gigi was right. She posted on the previous page that she saw what looked like an awesome mailbox across the street from you. How awesome is that! And here’s the close up of that.

Like the whole idea and reasoning behind this. Another example of: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. And out whit the snow plow!

  4. Jeff says:

Thanks for the technical break down on the mailbox. Hmm do I see a million dollar business to start-up??
Hobo Nation Mailbox Company. We put the sping in your walk…to a safer mailbox solution! We eat snowplows.

  5. Candice in Alabama says:

Oh wow – IT IS an awesome mailbox – # 4 is the name De Buff!?!?!?!

  6. Jeff says:

De Buff like De Bears? shall we crown this the MOST Awesomeist mailbox of them all???

  7. Laurenis says:

Of all the mailboxes, and I’ve enjoyed the last 38, this one makes the most sense, function wise. (But i still love the little stairs mailbox).

  8. Cara says:

What? none of you noticed it’s one downfall? It’s red flag is too small and completely ineffective….=) Unless I guess the postman always approaches it from the right side. =)

    Matt

I bet you had some SPIRNG to your steps when you passed this mailbox!

When you have a letter going airmail you put the letter in the box, pull it back with the lid open and fire away to the closest airport for delivery!

  10. Don in Tennessee says:

After further review of this mailbox-it is in De Buff! How imbarrassing for the postal carrier.

  11. Don in Tennessee says:

e not i in embarrassment you ADD idiot!

I thought I would beat one of you to the punch on this one.

  12. Janine says:

    This is the best.

  13. Jason says:

I am thinking that the spring was from an old garage door. Love the ingenuity.
