Day 93

Oh, come on!

April 1st, 2012

As previously noted, NYPD officers are notorious for parking their cars on the sidewalks outside precinct houses. As a pedestrian, I am always annoyed by this, although I have to admit that there's no easy solution to the problem of parking shortages around police stations. But here at the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, the street is actually wide enough to accommodate on-street diagonal parking (as evidenced by the lines painted on the street), and yet the officers still choose to back their cars all the way onto the sidewalk! And while the sidewalk in the picture linked above was merely constricted, this one is completely obstructed and impassable.

How are they allowed to do that? I know they are the police and all, but does “by example” mean anything? How can you expect anyone else to follow the law when they themselves don’t? I just can’t believe they are allowed to do this kind of thing. Must be a “big city” kinda thing.

You should walk in and ask the cops… politely… why they are all parked up on the sidewalk. Explain that it is endangering your safety as a pedestrian by having to walk in the street around them.

It seems fashionable for the media to deify public service employees these days. We see/hear TV ,movies, news stories that gush about how moral, brave and selfless many of these men/women are in the performance of their duties. Some even call them.. heroes.
What the media fails to understand is that the average person is not only well aware of that fact but extremely appreciative of those sacrifices. ( even if we do complain about the prices) We love them and for the most part think they do a great job.
The negative side of the coin is what we see here..too much recognition sometimes breeds entitlement . It appears via this photo that those whose job it is to uphold the law have felt free to pick and choose which of those laws they can be held accountable for…
….You know it doesn’t matter how much you love your cat…if you feed him too much… he’s going to end up being….just another fat cat.
