Holy Clamato! Beer mixed with clam juice in a can!? I guess it does take the work out of chasing raw oyster with a bottle of suds. Oh my – tummy gets queasy just thinking about this.
When I wore a younger man’s clothes, back in Kansas, it was not uncommon for some folks in the bars to mix tomato juice in their beer. I didn’t indulge, and I’m not sure how popular the clam factor might have been had that been available, but it was done with draft beer, and not prepackaged. Seems to me, it might be like drinking beer with Manhattan Clam Chowder.
The Bud and Clamato is not bad (but not something you’d want buy a case of for a long night!). However, whenever I see these in the cooler, I think Bud and chlamidia (sp?), and it’s just a real turnoff. I know…gross, but just an example of the price I pay for a creative writer’s mind.
I’m with you Matt, some “new” things can wait and let someone else try them! Hope you found a beverage to your liking and are resting comfortably on a cushy bed with your feet up!
Oh, geez. I mentioned the Beer/Clamato thing to my daughter-in-law when it first came up (kinda Fruedian, huh, Michael in Atlanta?) She just got a job at a convenience store and she was surprised that they actually sell quite a bit of that “red beer.” She says it’s pretty popular. I just can’t imagine it!!!!
Big deal! I have known the barbarous people of Esamocia eat of a conserve of sea-mice mashed and brayed in a mortar with the flesh of that beast named bos-marinus, seasoned with salt and garlic.
Prithee, yonder gold peaches and raisins of the sun as an antidote.
Every time I see those cans in the grocery stores here in WA, I just get sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Not that I drink any kind of alcohol in general (honest engine! My husband LOVES the fact that he has a built in designated driver) but if I did, I would totally stay away from that stuff.
My husband has taught me a lot about beer (he’s a beer snob and we live in the beer capital of the US here) so I can pick out a pretty darn good beer for him. But, he wouldn’t drink Bud if you gave it to him for free.
Some people are wine snobs…I live with THE beer snob. :)
I don’t know how I am so good at picking it…I guess after getting to know what goes into making beer…I’ve just been lucky I guess. I can tell just by the ingredients, look of the beer, and specs.
All the rest of this discussion became mere background noise when I read, “we live in the beer capital of the US here…” We’re talking Washington state, right? Surely you’re not talking Olym, “it’s the water, and not much more,” pia? I’m fairly certain Rainier wouldn’t qualify (or is that wouldn’t have qualified) as the beer to make such a claim about. So, what are we talking about here?
I thought Milwaukee was the beer capital of the US. I lived in Wisconsin for 5 years and those German catholics drink a lot! I know that because I was married to one. There are quite a few beer brands that come from Milwaukee.
If it’s “hard” iced tea, wouldn’t it be like hard liquor, and therefore only iced tea… Half and Half is like milk/cream people sometimes put in tea no ? So it’d just be like the tea you make in the morning but cold
When I worked as a bartender in downeast Maine, we always had clamato in the cooler….people would have it with what they wanted on draft (usually Natty Lite….really highbrow!!)
Your in the land of craft beer……please don’t drink a bud…..some good ones out there….Big Sky…try the Trout Slayer…..Prong Horn IPA…….Widmer…Pyramid, Redhook…Black Butte Porter…..the next few hundred miles get your calories for good beer…sorry east coasters….best beer in the country is right in his path….
Now we are talking – those great micro brewers all over this great sudsy land. Although I drink Yuengling most of the time, I love to try micro brews from anywhere.
oh, duh! Thanks. I must be brain dead today. I guess I am just too used to merchandisers making up their own words. Chelada sounds like it should be some new model of car.
That's the idea, at least. I'm walking westward from New York City for nine months or so.
If everything goes according to plan, I'll be in Oregon when the clock runs out.
If nothing goes according to plan, maybe I'll end up in Peru or Mongolia or Pennsylvania.
You can read all about the details of my trip
if you're so inclined.
They sure like to mix it up out there, don’t they? Bud & Clamato, hard iced tea and lemonade…what’s next?
No say it is not so…….No No No…not right……Good Call Matt. I’ll by you a Sam Adams for looking the other way.
Children….Just Say NO to Beer and Clamato.
I am so happy to learn that Matt did not try one of these concoctions. Yes, just say no to beer with clamato.
Also, what’s up with Half & Half in the hard iced tea? Sounds dreadful, too.
Half Hard Twisted tea.. the other half …what?
lemonade…thanks Janine, sounds good to me.
does it not say half and half? Ewww….
What is with all of the 24 oz. cans? Did you try the half & half ice tea? Was it sweet our unsweet, lemon or no lemon?
I am sure you have quenched your thirst with an adult beverage.
They have those in California. Not too bad. Kind of a sweeter V-8.
The budweiser + clamato is actually pretty good, if you DON’T think about the fact that it has clam juice in it.
:-)
I would never have tried it on my own, but I’ve toured a couple of Anheuser-Busch (sp? So much fun!) plants and they have samples at the end.
Holy Clamato! Beer mixed with clam juice in a can!? I guess it does take the work out of chasing raw oyster with a bottle of suds. Oh my – tummy gets queasy just thinking about this.
Ha Ha! That is my husbands favorite! Clamato is HUGE in Montana!! It is ordered for at bar’s than tomato juice!!!
Stay strong, Matt. And please…no more pics of these beer/clamato can. I throw up a little in my mouth every time you show one.
gross… funny but gross.
mee too……ohhhh the taste…I know sorry to lovers of this concoction….
The Clamato on the far right is in Spanish, go for that one!
(I still say tea and lemonade sounds like a better combo on a hot Montana day)
Bud Light and Clamato? You’d want to go easy on that stuff. I don’t want to think about the taste on the way back up.
On the other hand, Matt should check out the nutrition label. Maybe there’s some kind of multiplier effect like on the chocolate-covered prunes… :D
I think it would go real nice with the choclate covered dried plums!

half & hallf….sounds like a hard arnold palmer
I agree
Hee hee hee…A hard man is good to find! Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Craig in NC , you sound like a good match to my friend Janine. Are you single ??? Match making while on the road with Matt Man.
$2.49 for a 24 oz. Budweiser? That’s expensive.
My husband tried the Bud-light Calamto he didn’t like it
Could anyone tell the difference between regular Bud & Clamato vs Bud Light & Clamato? Either way, ick!
The Chelata is good- try it!
Your right, John. The word “Clamoto” sounds like an STD.
Sorry, I misspelled Clamato. Oh well, (insert music here) you say Clamato, I say Clamoto….
I don’t blame you Matt, and I don’t even drink Beer (or Clamato!)
Matt, are you sure you are not holed up with a case of Budweiser Clamato!??!/
Night Night everyone! Sweet dreams!
I’m with you Matt, some “new” things can wait and let someone else try them! Hope you found a beverage to your liking and are resting comfortably on a cushy bed with your feet up!

Red beer is great in the morning. I question the canned version though.

Prithee, yonder gold peaches and raisins of the sun as an antidote.
huh?? what??
I think Jack Stack indulged in too much Bud/Clamato with some sea-mice mixed in.
ewwww….Don’t google sea-mice, unless you really want an answer!
Was it topped with Hershey’s Chocolate syrup?

How do you pick it out for him if you don’t drink?
Good one. there is always the sip and spit….method like coffee and wine tasters.
I don’t know how I am so good at picking it…I guess after getting to know what goes into making beer…I’ve just been lucky I guess. I can tell just by the ingredients, look of the beer, and specs.
*shrug*

Make sure you see all of the cool painted cattle statue/murals while you’re in Great Falls! Keep up the good pace and best of luck!

Oh wait i see the word lemonade now.. I couldn’t get where that was coming from.. Oh well
This looks like a fine breakfast beer.
I think you need to try it, isn’t this about seeing the country and trying new things?
Nasty just nasty (And I’m not even a beer drinker).
Beer and clamato would make for an interesting throwup…
When I worked as a bartender in downeast Maine, we always had clamato in the cooler….people would have it with what they wanted on draft (usually Natty Lite….really highbrow!!)

Michigan is the best beer state in the country, followed closely by California.
Okay, we all get the clams but what the heck is “Chelada” supposed to mean? Is that a take-off on enchilada that they just spelled wrong? ed.
Highlight the word, right click, selecte “search with Google”, results = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michelada
oh, duh! Thanks. I must be brain dead today. I guess I am just too used to merchandisers making up their own words. Chelada sounds like it should be some new model of car.
Don’t knock it till you try it…it’s like a Bloody Mary with beer and no fancy garnishments. They are actually yummy!
Clamato is very popular in Canada (one of main ingredients for a Bloody Caesar) … I love seafood (including clams) but just could not do it.

Well, a co-worker of mine is always sending me his current email link for “dark roasted blend” and I thought this would be appropriate for this post:

That is my husband’s favorite!
