I've passed by this intersection more than a dozen times in my life, but never before have I noticed this odd little monument sitting outside the Bronx County Courthouse. The plaque reads:
Keystone from an arch of the old bridge at Chateau Thierry
Gloriously and successfully defended by American troops
***
Presented to the County of the Bronx by the Grand Street Boys Post No. 1026 of the American Legion
Nov. 11, 1940
My grandfather Harry M. Walsh (1891-1945) from St. Paul Minnesota fought in this battle, for the US forces. Thanks for the photo and remembrance.
My grandfather Abraham Fleury form Marquette MI fought and was wounded in this battle. Next trip to NYC I will make a visit to this site will be a priority. Thank you.
As American Export Director of Champagne Pannier of Chateau Thierry, I will
Visit this site next week. Glad to be able to pay my respects.
My grandfather Donat Goyette from Pawtucket RI
fought in that battle also received Purple Heart for that
My father John Ward of Donaghmoyne, Ireland(County Monaghan) and Brooklyn, NY was in this battle and has a battle ribbon for it. He was in Battery B 106 Field Artillary of the 27 Division.
He rode a horse and pulled a howitzer. There is very little written about the 27 Division. Most of what I have read shows the division fighting in western France but he was only in battles in the east – Chateau Thierry, 2nd Battle of the Marne, Meuse Argonne, St Mihiel, Mt Faucon but I never see the 27 th connected with those battles. I did see where some Artillary was sent west but no other info. Anyone know anything else about this. Thank you for sharing the picture of the keystone of the bridge. I visited Chateau Thierry in 2015 and it was very meaningful to me.
