Day 13

Breakfast of champions

April 8th, 2010

The owner of the farm where I stayed last night wasn't too interested in talking, and I thought he was maybe a little suspicious of me, so I said a quick thanks and went out to set up the tent. But as I was heading out this morning, he brought his granddaughter down to see me off, and she brought me the "surprise" you see on the left side of the photo. Also pictured: socks in need of an airing and a couple of good-luck charms given to me by friends before I left.

How far did you get on Wednesday?

5th Avenue bar? Didn’t you work near a 5th Avenue? I think the granddaughter was trying to tell you something deep and meaningful here. I hope you have a lot of time to think about the implications on your walk.

    Candy and granola bars, eh?

Tomoko and I were wondering what you’ve been eating for breakfast, now we know. Nothing beats a good sugar rush before a days walk.

Is that the patron saint of doing really awesome crazy things other people only dream of?!

Good luck on your adventure! I am a friend of Jessamyn’s and Emily and have been following your sojourn. The only thing I wanted to suggest to you (which it seems you do not need) was to bring with you a small stove and a pot for coffee, tea, soups and things. I did not see it in your inventory but I am sure you considered it already.

I read your blog so far and was touched by the kindness of people. It makes me feel good and I am glad people are looking after you as you traverse the nation. Good luck and stay safe!

Thanks for the story. It is providing more perspective for me as a parent of a 25 yr old who just left Mass on a bike jouney that could take him over 5 months. ” Early note from Adam” Dad ” Stayed on a farm last night and the owner gave me the best steak sandwich I have ever had.

Did Peace Pilgrim inspire your walkabout, Matt? I think it’s wonderful and will add you to our early morning prayers. May you continue to be blessed to be the blessing that you are.
