Thanks to these lovely folks for the pizza and beer. As you may notice in the picture, Budweiser-with-Clamato made an appearance as well. I figured it was finally time to try it. I'd rate it as "disgusting". Better than "revolting", but worse than "gross". I'm glad I tried it, though, because now I feel like I really belong here in Montana.

I didn’t get past the bar pics and the beer garden, also funny “weather permitting”. What?! none at Thanksgiving or at 20 degrees and snow, although the sunshine index is better than ours in WNY, probably!
That’s one of the beauties of the journey, trying new things even if you find them not to your liking. I love the trees behind them. I brought this issue of the Bud Clamato up to about anyone who will listen to me, and I was surprised to hear that about half hate it and half love it from about 6 people surveyed who have tried it. I am keeping my eyes open for one just to try.

I swear if I had walked all that was up the winding roads and hills and some one handed me a clamato/beer mixature I probably would have tried it.. but it would have to be a quick choice on which side of the divide to barf on.

I’m allergic to clams, but I think I’d be willing to try “red beer” (beer and tomato juice). I’ve mixed beer and lemonade before, and it’s very refreshing.

You know, I happen to love V8 juice, which is mostly tomato juice, of course. And I love beer, as you well know. I’ve been known to down the occasional plate of clams. And who doesn’t enjoy a tart and vibrant lime now and then? But although these things taste great in and of themselves, I don’t think I’d want to throw them all in a blender to see what I could come up with.
Which is, of course, sort of what Anheuser-Busch did with their new Budweiser Chelada. Chelada, short for Michelada, is a sort of Mexican mixed drink in which beer is mixed with tomato or lime juice, or perhaps both, and salt. You may recall Miller launched its own version not long ago, Miller Chill , which has been fairly popular, and is even somewhat drinkable.
Anheuser-Busch, for some reason, decided they would roll out a chelada-style brew with tomato and, um, clam juice. According to the brewer, Budweiser Chelada (also available in Bud Light form) has been a big hit in its initial rollouts in the southwest. That shouldn’t surprise, since the Hispanic population there is quite familiar with cheladas. Not surprisingly, the can sports both English and Spanish dialogue. Alcohol content is 5% by volume, about the same as regular Bud.
I picked up a 24-ounce can for $2.29 to try it out, as I am wont to do whenever I see a new brew. As instructed on the can, I gently rolled the concoction around in the can before decanting to mix the ingredients fully.
Budweiser Chelada pours to a bright rosy pink color with no head formation, although some carbonation does come creeping up through the murky depths of the bloody-colored liquid. The smell is not at all like beer and only faintly like tomato juice. It does not portend well for what follows, mostly because, to me at any rate, the aroma is so completely unappetizing.
With a great degree of dread, I take a sip. Look, I’m a pretty liberal minded guy when it comes to beer, and I’m always up to trying new ones with an open mind. But this stuff is, my friends, nasty. The tomato flavor totally drowns out the beer, so you really aren’t going to taste much Budweiser here. But the beer manages to water the tomato down enough to ruin that, too. A hint of citrusy lime pokes through, but just a faint hint, with no clam that I can gather, and the whole mess ends with way too much salt for me in the finish, not to mention a particularly unpleasant aftertaste that lingers on the tongue.
It’s rare that I can’t finish a beer, but I drank maybe a few ounces out of the 24-ounce can, dumped the rest down the sink, popped open a Victory Sunrise Weiss and called it a day. But, it appears, Anheuser-Busch seems to have scored at least one small victory with Budweiser Chelada. I can now say Natural Light has moved up a notch to the second worst beer I’ve ever tasted.

Clam juice is a liquid strained from freshly shucked clams. In some regions, clam juice is made from cooked clams, while others use the liquid from fresh, raw clams. In either case, clam juice has a briny flavor which complements a wide range of dishes. GAG!!!!!!!!!!

Clamato Chelada: What beer drinkers drink when they run out of beer!
This stuff started appearing in Texas sometime in the past year too. Given Craig’s comment about the Mexican roots of this “brew,” I’m not surprised. But it also sounds and apparently tastes disgusting. This might explain why I’ve never seen it purchased by anyone, nor is it ever out of stock like many of the more appetizing offerings at my local grocery stores.
The only reason why I can ever see drinking this is out of complete and utter desperation. Perhaps in some post-apocalyptic world where all beer, wine and liquor has been destroyed, along with the knowledge and equipment required to make it. Then I might buy it. If it’s on sale.

Im glad you were daring enough to try it. I used to work at a bar and personally, anything that sounds like a disease is already a big “no-no” for me. Clamato does not sound like a good diseas to have, it probably right up there with another drink I would not like, and that would be the “Duck Fart” (eww).

I was walking around my small beach town yesterday, and passed the liquor store that I pass by every single day. Yesterday, however, I happened to notice a small neon sign advertising Budweiser Clamato. I have to say that right in the middle of main street I stopped and burst out laughing :) Thanks for sharing in a way that opens my eyes to treasures within my own little town :)

“Red Beer” or beer w/ tomato or V8 juice is actually delicious…it’s very common here (in KS where I’m from) My mom got me started on it after I was old enough to start drinking beer. You get lots of vitamins that way…lol. At least that is what I like to tell myself. :-P

Lime juice and salt in beer is good…that’s how my grandpa drinks it.
