Day 410

Gasoline Alley

February 12th, 2013

When I first passed this snowy strip two days ago, I somehow failed to notice this sign proclaiming it as one of the city's most intriguingly named parks. Unfortunately, I can't find any information about the origin of its appellation online. The name is probably a reference to the nearby Major Deegan Expressway (located just on the other side of that brown retaining wall), but I like to imagine it has something to do with those mystery garages located across the street.

    Or the Rod Stewart song

  2. tim says:

Could be a reference to the long-running comic strip created by Frank King, “Gasoline Alley.”

  3. Will says:

W230th Street between Riverdale Avenue and Broadway was home to several gas stations during the 1960s and 1970s. I believe that is where the term, “Gasoline Alley” originated. W230th Street is interrupted by Ewen Park, therefore the street resembles a long alleyway.
