June 17th, 2010

Day 83

Not crossing a lake

June 17th, 2010

This necessitated a nice little detour.

Day 83

Post-detour tire

June 17th, 2010

No off-roading involved, believe it or not.

Day 83

More yellow

June 17th, 2010

Day 83

Redundancy?

June 17th, 2010

Can one mutilate something without damaging it?

Of course, the bigger question is: What events precipitated the construction of a sign explicitly prohibiting mutilation?

Day 83

A reasonable sign

June 17th, 2010

I think it's fair to hold people accountable for their own bathroom accidents.

Day 83

A Mighty Wind

June 17th, 2010

Day 83

The wind takes its toll

June 17th, 2010

It blew my sign off! Tomorrow's supposed to be even windier, so I'll wait until Saturday to install a new one (I brought extras!).

Day 83

Relentless

June 17th, 2010

Day 83

Three silos

Good ol’ 34th St

June 18th, 2010

Another fine North Dakota road

Day 84

And it gets better

June 18th, 2010

Day 84

Going around

June 18th, 2010

After several forays through swamps and fields, and a climb onto a railroad embankment, I finally made it out to a more walkable road.

Day 85

A coupla more old-timers

June 19th, 2010

Day 85

Day 85

Jamestown, ND

June 19th, 2010

Defining the skyline

Day 85

Of course

June 19th, 2010

It's just your standard one of those.

Day 85

A net full of eyeballs

June 19th, 2010

Day 85

My inflatable sleeping pad has sprung a few leaks that I've been unable to successfully patch, so my parents mailed a new one (or, rather, my dad's not-used-much one) to the post office in Jamestown, where I'll be resting my feet for a few days.

Day 88

I dedicate this picture of the "World's Largest Buffalo" to my fantastic father and to all the other great dads out there, present and past.

Day 88

High-tech rest area

June 22nd, 2010

North Dakota provides free WiFi at many of their rest areas.

Day 88

Dakota dirt

Day 89

Upon further reflection

June 23rd, 2010

Day 89

Yesterday

June 23rd, 2010

was a quiet day

Day 89

Fortunately, this was not a road I needed to travel.

Day 89

Debra

June 23rd, 2010

An extremely kind and giving woman, she invited me in without hesitation, gave me a bed for the night, and made sure my belly was full of homecooked food, both during my stay and well into the future.

Day 89

Day 89

Heliport!

June 23rd, 2010

Next to this tiny little clinic in Medina, ND.

Day 89

The Decoy Bar

June 23rd, 2010

Must be a mob front.

Day 89

My canine companion

June 23rd, 2010

Daisy (I learned her name when her owners finally tracked her down) walked with me for about eight miles today. She chased after every living thing she saw/heard/smelled, resulting in some good wildlife sightings for me: deer, fox, porcupine, and all sorts of waterfowl.

Day 89

That's what I was asked by Tim, a bearded gentleman driving a white car. Coming just a few minutes after a nice fellow in a truck handed me a hamburger, it felt like the appropriate thing to drink. Then I realized: he called it a soda! After more than 1000 consecutive miles in steadfast "pop" territory, I've started hearing "soda" again (though not exclusively) in the past few days.

Also, and I'd have to check my notes to verify this, I believe that every time someone has offered me a soft drink on the road (it's happened a handful of times), it's been a Pepsi.

Day 90

Pop strikes back!

June 24th, 2010

Day 90

Day 90

Hay there!

June 24th, 2010

Day 90

John Coal Train

June 24th, 2010

Day 91

My home last night

June 25th, 2010

To reiterate from a previous post, it's not uncommon for someone to let me stay on their property but not want to have anything else to do with me. When I don't write about where I stayed for an evening, this is usually what's happened.

Day 91

Awesome mailbox #32

June 25th, 2010

From a distance it looked like the post was made of antlers, which would have been considerably awesomer.

Day 91

Day 91

I had no idea who Era Bell Thompson was.

Day 91

The Driscoll Cafe

June 25th, 2010

Thanks for the free lunch, ladies!

Day 91

Some fellow diners

June 25th, 2010

Aunt Tillie is 103 and still lives by herself!

Day 91

The magic of TP

June 26th, 2010

I had a good chuckle back in Minnesota when I came across toilet paper covering miles of sealed asphalt cracks, but now I laugh no more. I can't tell you how many times today my feet got stuck in the hot, gooey sealant covering this road.

Day 91

I think I saw Martha Stewart build one of these on her holiday special.

Day 91

Awesome mailbox #33

June 26th, 2010

Typical.
