The sign was originally two-sided, but someone stole the back of it about 15 minutes after they set it out!

Day 122

Dinner is served

July 26th, 2010

Willy saw me strolling by and called out to me: "Hey, come on over and have some dinner!" So I did. I also got some fresh produce from his new terraced hillside garden: carrots, radishes, lettuce, and spinach.

From left to right: Carol, Anna, Carson, Willy

Day 122

A peaceful road

July 26th, 2010

I'm so glad to be off the highway for a few days!

Day 122

July 26th, 2010

But this patient fellow just stayed perfectly still for me.

Protesting logging or just having fun?

Day 124

A mountain spring

July 28th, 2010

St. Ignatius's water supply is contaminated with E. coli, but this spring a few miles outside town runs clean and cold, straight out of the mountain. I would have missed it if it weren't for a couple of locals filling up water bottles here.

Day 124

Callee and Madan

July 28th, 2010

Madan is my buddy from New York, but he grew up in Montana. I knew he was coming out to visit friends and family sometime soon, but I didn't know any other details. Then, all of sudden, he and his friend Callee showed up on a gravel road in the middle of the woods, bearing knishes from New York! They walked with me for a while, and we ate lunch together in St. Ignatius, where I had my first huckleberry product: a milkshake.

Day 125

Perma Stone

July 30th, 2010

Not Perma Mountain.

(Perma is actually the name of the community where this business is located.)

Day 126

Mike!

July 30th, 2010

Remember ol' Norbert from way back in eastern Pennsylvania? I stayed with his family in the house where the guy tried to shoot his daughter back in the 30s. Well, I met his brother Mike this morning! Mike was heading home to Spokane when he spotted me walking down the highway, so he pulled over to say hi and make a contribution to my restaurant fund. Can you see the resemblance to Norbert? It was very apparent in person.

Day 126

If it ain’t baroque…

July 30th, 2010

I was filling up water bottles at this spring when I met Curtis, who just stopped by on his way back to Portland. He had been playing bass in a nearby baroque music festival. Perhaps we'll run into him again on down the line...

Clark Fork

I accidentally snapped this photo, but it looks more dramatic than the one I intentionally took.

(The first word is "ENTERING".)
